Varnado headed to Miami

Jarvis Varnado is in for a serious change of scenery. After spending four years in Starkville, MS, the Mississippi State Bulldogs center is headed to South Beach after being drafted by the Miami Heat in the 2010 NBA Draft. Varnado was taken with the 40th overall selection.

Varnado averaged 13.8 points and 10.3 rebounds in his senior season for the Bulldogs, but it was his work on the defensive end that made him a serious draft prospect. Varnado finished his career as the NCAA’s all-time leading shot-blocker, with 564. His performance made him a finalist for the Naismith and Wooden awards. (Read More…)

Bulldogs get plenty of home cooking at start of 2010

By Bud L. Ellis

If the Mississippi State Bulldogs want to rise from the bottom of the Southeastern Conference’s Western Division in 2010, the Bulldogs need to roar out of the gates in the new season.

With four of its first five games in Starkville, Mississippi State has a golden opportunity to get off to a fast start. It begins with the season opener on Sept. 4 at home against Memphis, followed by a home game five days later on Thursday Night Football against Auburn in the SEC opener.

Mississippi State hits the road for Death Valley and a tough matchup with LSU on Sept. 18, only to return home for two more games in a row: Sept. 25 against Georgia and Oct. 2 vs. Alcorn State.

The tough road stretch to end the season begins on Oct. 9 at Houston, followed by a trip to Florida the next week. After returning home to face UAB for homecoming on Oct. 23 and Kentucky on Oct. 30, November brings two road games. It starts after the bye week on Nov. 13 at defending national champion Alabama. After a home game with Arkansas on Nov. 20, the regular season ends at Ole Miss on Nov. 27.
